Good vision is essential to how children learn, play and develop. Because children rarely complain about their eyes — they assume everyone sees the way they do — vision problems often go unnoticed until they affect school performance.

Why early eye exams matter

Many serious childhood eye conditions, such as lazy eye (amblyopia) and squint (strabismus), are much easier to treat when caught early. After a certain age, the visual system becomes harder to correct.

When should children have eye exams?

  • Newborn: a basic red-reflex check by a paediatrician.
  • 6–12 months: first comprehensive eye screening.
  • 3–5 years: full vision and eye alignment test before school.
  • Every year after: routine screening, or sooner if problems appear.

Warning signs parents should watch for

  • Sitting too close to the TV or holding books very close
  • Frequent eye rubbing, blinking or head tilting
  • Covering or closing one eye while reading
  • Complaints of headaches or eye strain after school
  • White glow in the pupil in photographs

Children with undetected vision problems are often mislabelled as inattentive or slow learners. A simple eye exam can change a child's entire school experience.

What happens during a paediatric eye exam?

The exam is completely child-friendly. The ophthalmologist checks visual acuity, eye alignment, focusing ability and the overall health of the eye. Dilating drops may be used to get an accurate measurement — this is safe and painless.

Tips for healthy children's eyes

  1. Limit continuous screen time and encourage outdoor play — outdoor light helps slow myopia progression.
  2. Ensure good lighting for reading and homework.
  3. Provide a diet rich in green vegetables, eggs and fish.
  4. Book an exam immediately if you notice any warning sign.

Regular eye exams are a small investment that protects your child's learning, confidence and development for life.
